Walks planned on the South Ormsby Estate led by Steve Lovell

About the estate at South Ormsby – spread over 3000 acres in the beautiful Lincolnshire Wolds, its aim is to become the most progressive and sustainable country estate for the community and business with nature always at the heart of all its activities.

THURSDAY 22ND January
Winter Birds on the Estate
Afternoon commencing at 1-30pm

On this walk we will explore a mix of farmland and woodland looking for Thrushes, Buntings and Finches before we finish in the ancient parkland to see the magnificent Red Kites coming into their communal winter roost
Duration - 2.5 hours
Walking a maximum of 2.5 to 3 miles on flat terrain at a steady pace, boots required.

THURSDAY 19TH FEBRUARY
Winter Birds on the Estate
Afternoon commencing at 2pm

This walk will have the same format as the January walk looking for Thrushes, Finches and Buntings but on an area of the estate that is normally closed to the public. Again, we will return to the Parkland to see the Red Kites coming into their communal winter roost.
Duration of 2.5 hours
Walking a maximum of 2.5 to 3 miles on flat terrain at a steady pace, boots required.

WEDNESDAY 18TH March
Signs of Spring on the Estate
Morning commencing at 9-30 am

As the days lengthen our resident birds will be setting up their breeding territories and hopefully proclaiming it with a burst of song. We will have a stroll across our farm and through the woodland to check out some of our avian residents, we should see a few mammals as well.
Duration of 2.5 hours
Walking a maximum of 2.5 to 3 miles at a steady pace over flat terrain, boots required.

Tuesday 21st April
Residents and New Arrivals
Morning at 9-30pm

With our resident birds already in their territories, this month will see the arrival of visitors from the warmer climes of Africa. We will be looking for Warblers and Swallows whilst keeping an eye on the skies above us as resident Birds of Prey should be displaying in the lengthening days.
Duration of 2.5 hours
Walking a maximum of 2.5 to 3 miles over flat terrain at a steady pace. Boots required.

There is generally a charge of £16 per person which includes the walk and locally sourced refreshments and food.

Please book through the website.

On a general note, although these walks are bird orientated, we will also be looking at the Estate from a general nature perspective.

With these walks, please bring binoculars but some will be available to use on the day, don’t forget your cameras.

Local transport can be provided from the Lincoln area, just let me know if you book on one of these events.

  • Bird watching on Bempton Cliffs.26.4.2019 - Super day out in a small party of four birdwatchers. We were transported to the RSPB centre at Bempton and back home, and excellent lunch provided too! Steve shared his considerable knowledge throughout the day as we learned about the seabirds and other birds found in the area. We had close-up views of the cliff birds including puffins, kittiwakes, gannets, fulmars and ended the day watching stock doves and a short-eared owl. Steve knows where and when to go to provide an interesting and rewarding day. and I highly recommend his trips.
